American cinema shifted into fifth gear in the 1970s when revered author and photographer Gordon Parks breathed life into the major studio black action movie. Sharp, keen and highly stylized, SHAFT was a feature that demanded to be made, and it busted out with a fury. John Shaft is a harder-than-stone private detective battling mob boss Bumpy, and soon facing off against the Mafia in an all-out battle. Isaac Hayes' award-winning score is enough to make you ten times tougher. SHAFT was the first of countless urban actioners, creating a style of film that would eventually be dubbed "blacksploitation". Many were action and crime tales, but by the end of the '70s, audiences had been treated to black westerns, black vampires and even a black gestapo! But this is where everything started, and where it was done with the most heart, artistry and respect. With these screenings, we honor Gordon Parks, the first black director to make a major Hollywood film, who passed away March 7th of last year.
