AFS: 71 FRAGMENTS OF A CHRONOLOGY OF CHANCE
Rated Unknown; 96min; Director:Michael Haneke
AUSTIN FILM SOCIETY ESSENTIAL CINEMA SERIES:
THE FILMS OF MICHAEL HANEKE THROUGHOUT APRIL/MAY AT THE ALAMO DOWNTOWN
Haneke is, perhaps, the most controversial of contemporary European directors. His films, all of which determinedly make no concessions to the viewer, have both alienated audiences (being booed at Cannes) and won them over; he has established a position as one of cinema's important provocateurs, a concept lost in an era where cultural/political subversion is often seen as passe, or conceived with jaundiced, anti-humanist cynicism. Equally importantly, he has presented demanding philosophical questions in a formal cinematic language that has a bold and uncomprising nature to match its content.

APRIL 17 - 7:00pm 71 FRAGMENTS OF A CHRONOLOGY OF CHANCE
Michael Haneke's third feature film expands on the claustrophobically enclosed subject matter of his earlier films, which looked at various problems in society from the viewpoint of the middle-class family. The focus remains on those disenchanted by bourgeois morality, hypocrisy and the absurdities of modern society, but the scope here is extended to examine this point of view from a fractured cross-section of different viewpoints, all of them united by a moment of shocking and senseless violence.
