An unjustly maligned "misstep" in the career of Robert Altman, O.C. & Stiggs was shelved following production and given only limited release in 1985, leading many to dub it "the film Robert Altman doesn't want you to see!" Not quite: Forced against his will to make a crass teen comedy, Altman instead made a parody of the genre that satisfied neither the studios nor the audience. Newly rediscovered on DVD, the film can finally be appreciated as the ahead-of-its-time satire that it is. Based on a popular characters originally created for National Lampoon, O.C. & Stiggs concerns two nihilistic teenagers who spend the summer pulling mean-spirited pranks on the middle-class suburbanites they so despise. However, unlike most slacker comedies of the era (and beyond), these characters are juvenile, homophobic, and almost completely unlovable, making O.C. & Stiggs one of the most polarizing—and subversively hilarious—movies ever made.
