| Barbara Stanwyck, George Brent, John Wayne. Directed by Alfred E. Green. Before the 1934 Production Code brought the spector of censorship on Hollywood, the movies got away with quite a lot. The recently unearthed "lost footage" that even the pre-Code censors cut from "Baby Face" has only enhanced its reputation as "one of the most stunningly sordid films ever made" (The New York Times). See for yourself. Stanwyck scorches as an abused, small-town girl who moves to Manhattan and sleeps her way to the top. Seeing a young John Wayne as one of Stanwyck's victims is an added hoot. "Baby Face" regularly sells out encore engagements at New York's Film Forum. Plus: "The Shadow - Chapter 9" www.filmforum.org/films/baby.html |
