Irish playwriting phenomenon Martin McDonagh shot to world recognition with his Leenane trilogy, A Skull in Connemara, is the middle play and is the only writer since Shakespeare to have had four plays performed concurrently in London. Two of his plays have also run concurrently on Broadway and McDonagh is the recipient of several awards including four Tonys. As a young man, McDonagh absorbed the rhythms of speech and way of life of his Gaelic-speaking-father, his extended Irish family, the London neighborhood where he lived, and the TV soaps and movies that he loved. The result is his anarchic and darkly comic writing.
In this play, local grave-digger Mick Dowd, exhumes more than bodies when he has to dig up and dispose of seven year old corpses to make room for new ones. One corpse just happens to be that of his dead wife, Oona, and village rumors begin to resurface about his part in her death. In the meantime, gormless copper, Thomas Hanlon dreams of police stardom in the style of American cop shows, and his younger brother, Mairtin, a loutish and occasionally eloquent troublemaker, ends up with the grisly task of helping Mick to dig the graves. Through it all, Maryjohnny Rafferty, the Hanlon's poteen-slugging, sly-eyed granny, keeps up a running commentary on the bingo, the weather and the village gossip (from 27 years ago to the present) while having a few digs of her own.
