Sometimes the urge to rock is so overpowering it can cause a total identity crisis: Look at Garth Brooks’ grungy alter-ego Chris Gaines (or better yet, don’t) for an example of what happens when the siren call of a power chord proves too powerful to resist. Thankfully, Austin’s premier string band White Ghost Shivers—whose members go by names like Smokebreak Slemenda and Deathmaster—already live in the land of make-believe, so adopting a new persona for this rare rock show should be a thousand times less awkward than Brooks in that Trent Reznor wig. We’re not sure what will happen when the band tosses out its ‘20s garb and unleashes its metal-head side, but it’s safe to say that headliner and Guitar Hero favorites Lions will have some formidable competition. Opener Peel—whose slacked-out debut fondly recalls a lazy, mid-’90s summer spent smoking weed and listening to Pavement—gets this party started. www.theonion.com

Very cool rock band. Addictive tunes.
Austinist Interviews SXSW: Peel
“A youthful blend of indie pop with noisy drums, keyboards, and multiple vocalists, Peel wouldn’t sound at all out of place on late 80’s college radio…”

Do512 Presents: Lions, The White Ghost Shivers (RARE ROCK SHOW!!!) and Peel

Allstarpick Friday 07/20 (08:00PM) @ The Parish 214 W 6th St (map)

Do512 IRON-ON PARTY 8p-9p!  Free Do512 T-shirts given to the first 50 people...Iron-On anything you want to say on the back!

ALL AGES SHOW!!

A little-known fact about the White Ghost Shivers is they're all metal heads and punk rockers underneath those fake mustaches and 1920s garb. The rock alter egos are usually only seen when you catch a glimpse of the Shivers fist-pumping front-row at The Sword or Lions show or if you've listened to the piercing metal bands they "relax" to while on the road. The ROCK show permits them to unleash that particular underbelly on Austin and let their inner rock demons take the stage.

There are no press clips about the Rock show. There are no recordings. This is one show you have to experience in person.

Allison Moore's keys birthed pop slathered with the distortion fuzz of Josh Permenter's guitar and shouted harmonies of Dakota Smith. The quintet's exuberant nihilism balances a disaffected urban malaise and ambitious restlessness, an ethos continued with their upcoming follow-up EP. – Doug Freeman
