The Film:
A day in the life of two ordinary south central Los Angeles youths (Ice Cube and Chris Tucker) turns crazy when they inadvertently anger a local drug dealer.

There have been very few modern day cult classics. Friday is, without a doubt, on that short list. When I see this movie is on, I stop, sit down and watch it every single time. One of the major factors for that is the manic tour-de-force performance by a then-unknown Chris Tucker. Prior to Friday, his only screen credit was as nearly invisible extra "Johnny Booze" in House Party 3, but it was this film that gave him his break-out role. Friday didn't win any Oscars, but Tucker was nominated for three MTV Movie Awards in 1996 for his portrayal of Smokey. Ice Cube also shines as the affable straight man, and the supporting cast of comedy greats including John Witherspoon, Bernie Mac and Anthony Johnson keep this film moving fast.

The Event:
We are screening the film in Helen Keller Park, a mere 3 blocks away from the shooting location of the film, (which was 126th Street and Normandie, for those who want to cruise by before the screening).

Before the film, we will screen a reel of vintage 35mm trailers from other cult classic African American films featuring stars such as Richard Roundtree, Bernie Mac, Yaphet Kotto, Isaac Hayes, Pam Grier and more.
