The Redwalls went from unknown to over-hyped to neither unknown nor over-hyped with bewildering speed. Most people hadn’t heard of the Illinois band until the release of De Nova, its debut for Capitol Records. The Beatles-worshipping quartet’s Britpop was certainly pleasant enough, but the praise heaped on De Nova quickly grew overheated. The band toured relentlessly in 2005, but aside from a stint opening for Oasis, The Redwalls stayed close to home and kept a low profile last year, working on the recently released The Wall To Wall Sessions EP. Fans of Clap Your Hands Say Yeah should check out Chicago singer-songwriter Ezra Furman: His reedy voice and slightly warped lyrical twists have much in common with that band’s Alec Ounsworth (and in turn, Gordon Gano of the Violent Femmes). Minty Fresh will release Furman’s Banging Down The Doors this month, with Modest Mouse producer Brian Deck behind the boards. Also playing: Mark Mallman. www.theonion.com
