about 1 year ago.More than any other local record this year, the loose-limbed charms of Peel’s self-titled debut gives credence to the idea that a full-blown ’90s revival is just around the corner. Whereas the shards of fuzzed-out guitar, jagged psychedelia, and general stoner weirdness that were the bread and oddly colored butter of groups like Pavement and Olivia Tremor Control felt like an older brother’s dorky wool hat during the last generation’s self-serious return to the ’80s, the hyperbolic press Peel has been receiving proves that the time is right to return to the age of smart-assed slackers and super-fun West Campus keggers. Maybe opener Horse Plus Donkey should also lighten up and apply its apocalyptic reverb to a goofy three-minute pop song instead of its usual sinister—albeit entrancing—slouch toward Bethlehem. If not, you can still rely on Master Pancake Theater crack-up John Erler to provide a little merriment. www.theonion.com
