Celebrate John Henry Faulk's Birthday & the First Amendment on August 21st in Zilker Park
Start time:6:30 PM
End time:10:00 PM
Location:Zilker Park

Join family and friends of John Henry Faulk in Zilker Park on Tuesday, August 21, for a free screening of a new documentary called “John Henry Faulk: In His Own Words,” preceded by the Lounging Philosophers and ice cream and cake.

John Henry Faulk, born on August 21, 1913, is Austin’s finest humorist, storyteller, and entertainer, who was blacklisted during the dark period of the 1950s and spent the rest of his life advocating for free speech and the First Amendment. Austin’s Central Library was named after John Henry Faulk in 1994.

On August 21, the evening’s activities begin at 6:30 pm with the Lounging Philosophers (Council Member Lee Leffingwell, Jim Harrington, and SOS executive director Bill Bunch), at the Philosophers’ Rock by the entrance to Barton Springs. They will emulate a conversation on the First Amendment among John Henry Faulk’s mentors: Roy Bedichek, J Frank Dobie, and Walter Prescott Webb.

At 7:30 pm, ice cream and cake will be served in front of the Splash Exhibit at the Beverly S. Sheffield Education Center.

At 8:00 pm, at the Zilker Hillside Theater, Liz Faulk, John Henry Faulk’s widow, will be among those introducing the documentary “John Henry Faulk: In His Own Words.” (People are encouraged to bring lawn chairs.)

Produced by Pam Thompson, and narrated by Cactus Pryor, the 55-minute documentary is based on interviews with John Henry Faulk that aired on Frank Morrow’s access television program Alternative Views in the late 1970s and 1980s. It also includes archival photographs from a collection at the University of Texas’ Center for American History as well as excerpts from a conversation of John Henry Faulk’s family and friends sharing their memories of him.

This project is funded in part by the City of Austin through the Cultural Arts Division and by a grant from the Texas Commission on the Arts. This project has also received considerable in-kind support from Public Access Community Television (PACT), where Pam Thompson is a producer.
