The energetic garage rockers in Shapes Have Fangs have street cred—listed influences include The Monks—and a revved-up sound akin to post-Libertines UK guitar bands, but they’re not quite The Arctic Monkeys US (yet). Still, their songs look pretty good on the dancefloor, driven by a tense jangle of guitars, insistent keyboard lines, and hiccup-y vocals. Frequent comparisons to The Shins are somewhat apt, but despite a superficial resemblance to that band’s twisted pop, the lineage extends to the sort of jittery, jubilant pop-punk plied by XTC, Richard Hell, and The Jam, with blasts of no-wave saxophone and reverb-laden ’50s guitars thrown in for good measure. All comparisons aside, Shapes Have Fangs has serious bite. Opening: The Diagonals. www.theonion.com
