Thursdays have become the nights for rock shows at The Cantina, and this bill for the first one in October is no exception. Kicking things are off are Jetsuns, a local psych/prog/pop band outfit with a new recording of music. Their earlier material I have previously described as '2001: A Space Odyssey' meets My Bloody Valentine, a fantastic blend of retro shoegaze with modern pop tendencies. This new batch from Jetsuns has moved decidedly more toward a sound that reminds me of Rush meets Ride - boxy riffs herk and jerk the listener in between swirls of darker moods, creating a dynamic that's less hypnosis and more shock. That said, the band always does a fantastic job of recreating the material live, and it should not be missed. They're not around all that often, so catch this show. Also on the bill are War Against Sleep, Rescue Mission (one of the better Austin bands to modernize the late 70s/early 80s British pop scene), and The Story Of (a prog/pop band whose blend of brains and booty should have caught on with What Made Milwaukee Famous fans ages ago).
