After signing to indie boutique Barsuk and re-releasing Trying to Never Catch Up last year, these local indie faves had to lie low while the rest of the world caught up. read more at AustinChronicle.com
about 1 year ago.Austin’s What Made Milwaukee Famous began its journey to fame last year when it signed with Barsuk Records (original home of Death Cab For Cutie), which re-released the band’s debut Trying To Never Catch Up. Like Barsuk’s most celebrated product, WMMF crafts shimmering indie-pop gems while also occasionally kicking out the dance-rock jams or experimenting with sparse acoustic numbers. Though constant touring has kept the band away for nearly a year, it doesn’t mean it’s forgotten its Austin fan base: WMMF will preview its sophomore album (not due until spring ‘08) with a two-night stand at The Parish, supported by a sampler of some of the best bands this town has to offer. Opening Thursday is the show-stopping White Denim and its mix of spastic funk-punk and guttural blues-rawk, and “ghetto folk” chanteuse Pink Nasty; Friday it’s the jagged math-rock of Ume, the Talking Heads-inspired groove of The Black And White Years, and a set from Zykos’ Mike Booher and Catherine Davis.
