Event Details

The Austin Friends of Traditional Music will host its second annual
Austin String Band Festival at Camp Ben McCulloch, October 19 to 21.
ASBF2 promises to be a weekend of fun for folks who love old-time
bluegrass and traditional string band music.  Former Austinite Danny
Barnes headlines this year's festival, along with the Mexican Roots
Trio, Sarah Jarosz, and many others.

The festival kicks off on Friday night with bluegrass and old-time
blues from the Boxcar Preachers and driving bluegrass from the Onion
Creek Crawdaddies. Then,  Houston-based Cory McCauley and the
Evangeline Aces playing Cajun music for dancing.

Then on Saturday the festival starts a full day of workshops on a
variety of traditional music styles and techniques, and the
ever-popular Ask A Geezer workshop, your opportunity to find out how
funny cranky old musicians can be!  At noon Saturday is a contra-dance
with Rich McMath calling to the driving sounds of Runaway Brides.  On
the stage line-up for Saturday starting at 3 p.m.  are Eddie Collins
and the High Stakes Rollers playing high-powered acoustic music rooted
in bluegrass. Also featured on Saturday are performances by The
Mexican Roots Trio, Joel Guzman and Sarah Fox's tribute to 1930s and
1940s Texas Conjunto; Austin bluegrass bands the Gray Sky Boys and
Twangzilla; Appalachian and early American traditional music by Hold
'Er Newt and by the Double Eagle String Band; and teen mandolin phenom
Sarah Jarosz.  Danny Barnes and Friends will close the Saturday-night
show starting at 10 p.m.

Camp Ben McCulloch is a 20-minute drive southwest of downtown Austin
on FM 1826 across from the Salt Lick restaurant.  There will be
primitive camping, a variety of tasty and healthy food choices,
jugglers and other entertainment for children, including a playground.
A series of workshops will take place during the day on Saturday that
focus on various traditional music styles and techniques. Mini-sets in
between the main stage acts will feature talented local musicians. In
addition, throughout the weekend there will be informal picking and
grinning under the shady oaks.
