When people criticize Charles Attal for injecting corporate music into Stubb’s and Stubb’s Jr. (Emos), this is what they’re referring to: MTV-engineered products.
Posted 8 months ago.Featuring sunny power-pop, production by Mark Hoppus of Blink-182 and +44 fame, and a vocal turn by Fall Out Boy’s Patrick Stump, 2005’s Commit This To Memory helped Minneapolis emo-rockers Motion City Soundtrack gain a sizable fan base. All of those followers are now basking in the rapture of Even If It Kills Me, the brand new album produced by Adam Schlesinger (Fountains Of Wayne, Ivy) and Girls Against Boys’ Eli Janney, with a partial assist from none other than Ric Ocasek. Mae pounds out the kind of noisy emo-rock that kids seem to love these days, but while the Virginia-based group is certainly cut out for MTV soundtracks, that doesn’t necessarily detract from the shining anthemic feel of its new Singularity . Like both MCS and Mae (and a lot of other similar emo-punk bands), Anberlin knows how to write an infectious hook, though it’s hindered by predictability.
