Michael Ault, who Variety named “The King of New York Nightlife,” brings his international nightclub to Austin this fall when he opens Pangaea, at 409 Colorado St., a bottle club and ultra lounge in the same vein as his ultra-chic clubs that attract the world’s most famous people.

Pangaea — Austin’s first ultra lounge fully devoted to the philosophy of bottle service, where the party is brought to guests, at their tables — is scheduled to open this fall in the city’s super-hot Warehouse District.

“When you go clubbing in New York, Vegas, Miami Beach or San Tropez, it’s bottle service,” says Ault, who brought the bottle-club service concept to the United States. “Why? Because when executed properly, it’s more interactive, more inclusive, more fun, more of everything. Like a cocktail party at one’s home, guests host their own parties.”

Ault continues: “We thought that a town that prides itself on ‘keeping it weird’ would be the perfect fit for an ultra lounge that embodies excitement and energy and an eclectic fusion of fantasy, escape and the primordial. Like Austin, Pangaea is unique, and we want to keep it that way. We are very pleased to be part of such an exciting city.”

Pangaea Austin will join a family of clubs in New York City, London, Miami Beach and Spain, with famous names like SpyBar (where the international lounge craze was born and successor to Studio 54), Chaos, Gryphon, MercBar and Privé — some of the most exclusive, most celebrated, most-written about clubs in the world, wowing celebrity guests with their sleek, exotic, colorful design and extraordinary attention to detail and service.

Before its media preview and opening, Pangaea will host several private parties and special events. Stay tuned.

People are waiting outside because it’s a marketing gimick. Even though there’s space inside, the line makes it falsely appear popular and exclusive.

When you’re waiting outside, it’s because the club is always full. I suppose that never occurred to you.

Guess what, Austin has already changed. Wake up. Thank you, Pangaea.

Sadly, someday you will be forty, or fifty. And at Pangaea, we 40 year olds can pick up hot 20 year olds. So how’s the idiot?

Pangaea Austin has all the worst qualities of people: shallow, materialistic, judgemental, classist, arrogant, rude, selfish, me me me attitude people. Plus the clientele and staff has a lot of mental issues: low self esteem and mood disorders aggravated by chemical dependancy and alcoholism. Waiting in line while there’s ton of open space inside is not “partying”. Drinking overpriced liquor outta plastic cups is not “classy”.

this is amusing, the diverse reactions to pangaea austin. first, as a club bartender FROM Austin who has worked in NYC and LA, I agree that Austin is very differentand should not be approached the same way as these cities….. but “keep austin weird”? no- that slogan is bullshit at this point- and a club with overpriced bottle service will rub some people the wrong way. but there are tons of people with alot of money who want an atmosphere and feeling that clubs like this provide. hell, if they are willing to pay for it, i say rock on. i’d rather not see them at the jackalope, if you know what i mean. but i can’t hate them for that, or michael ault (who, fyi, is a very congenial person) for providing it. as for the place lasting only three years, well, that is a club for you. and there will be someone else here putting them out of business too. they are not the SOLE reason for taxes going up--taxes are going up because people are flocking here in droves, and we might as well all face the fact that this town is changing.
as for a cheesy crowd….club crowds ARE cheesy, boring if you are not one of them, and FUN if you are into it…live and let live.
i do agree, however, that these guys should have not been so cocky when they got here. i was there when they shit talked club deville, starlight, and a few other places…sadly, they were shit talking to one of the owners
who was buying them dinner- and they had no idea who he was. that is just bad business, bad attitude, and poor taste…..for THAT reason I do not want to support them. i think it is tacky. still, more power to em…..keeps certain people away from the places i like….whew!
ps- big clubs almost always have attitude and shitty service….stick with the places you love or become someone they love….

It seems the people writing comments defending Pangaea all work there. The concept of hiring “party promoters” is such a fake way to make something seem cool. If people are fool enough to believe the hype, then they deserve to be parted with their $300 of cash (for $30 of liquor).
The service will always suck wherever there is an automatic gratiuty added. What motivation does the bottle girl have? She knows she’ll get $50 automatically. Her job is to look good, not to do anything useful.
Also, “much better than the original in NYC” – any thing seems better compared to a failure, the NYC location tanked very quickly.

Dude Pangaea is the place if you wanna meet a wasted hottie. Texas ABC only messes with poor people’s clubs, so Pangaea let’s us all get bottle wasted. We all know a 120 pound girl can’t handle much liquor, so why not go to a place where she’ll be knocking back 20 drinks worth :)? Easy pickins my brothers. Just don’t bring your own girl here if she can’t handle liquor, you don’t want to be holding her hair while she heaves and stuff at 3am. Who cares if they have plastic cups? I like shootin straight from the bottle.

Crushed with customers? So was every other night club when they first opened up. But what gets staying power is customer service.
bottle servers must not require business degrees.
and pangaea austin has NO connection with any other pangaea in the world except pangaea in seminole.
i really like the plug they are using now “live music venue” .. tryin hard to fit in.
still using plastic cups?

You all should be embarrassed. So much hatred. Where does that come from. You think this cat cares what you think. He’s probably skiing in Austria somewhere. His club is obviously packed, and many of you can’t get in. So what?

Wow! After reading these blogs, one thing is very clear, a lot of people in Austin hate success. How pathetic. If you can’t afford, or don’t like the club, don’t go. But to spill out all this venom, is so weak. Wait for the W Hotel. I can’t wait to go, and check out this big bad wolf.

I have worked at most of the top clubs in town. And I work at Pangaea, as a bottle server. If there have been minor service issues, it’s because we’re getting crushed with customers. People obviously get get enough of this place.

I’ve lived in Austin for five years, and I’ve never seen a club clear out a town so fast. Every other club in town is empty, no wonder the other nightclub owners hate them. They are getting killed.

Pangea Austin is for people who want to feel elite, but who aren’t, and have no idea what it really means. They are followers seeking an identity. They don’t get it, but meanwhile, chiching, ring that cash register (uh, I mean swipe that credit card reader) for the owners.

First, Michael Ault claims he offers a different kind of bottle service that no one has ever seen before… and “brings the party to the table” .. maybe I’m confused, or I was distracted by the dead Boar head in my face at my table.. but my waitress, actually, my bus boy brought our our bottle with a flashlight under it to light it up.. no big party really, just a flashlight. We did get some sparklers for our champagne.. are we at TAO… wait no, Pangaea….
Everyone in Austin is trying to do the whole “bottle service” thing, I know I’m a bottle whore and I can thank living in Las Vegas for that….but if you’re gonna do it, do it right. Don’t offer discount bottles or $100 bottles everynight of the week, you look cheap, and you’re taking away the whole “feel cool because you have a bottle” idea. Oh, and most def bottle service on 6h st (expcept Pure of course ;) , just stop.
But also, don’t charge $300 a bottle, one bottle per every 4 people (Were in Austin, not Las Vegas) and expect to serve me a drink in a plastic cup.
On to the original bulletin…..
--
I’m gonna be straight forward. I go out every night, I’ve partied like a rockstar, been there done that… and never have I seen service as SHITTY as I did tonight.
Pangaea Austin - I will never waste my time or money there ever again. All of the.. like—16 partners, (ha)—are assholes. The first thing they did was make enemies with other Austin nightclub owners.
We reserved a table tonight for my two best friends birthdays, we get there, and their “VIP Hostess” who doesnt have a fucking clue what she is doing doesn’t bother to help with any of the arrangements. Maybe they should have hired someone who knows how to work VIP, or maybe Jen could come over from GRUV one night and train her.
After we all went inside, we went upstairs, by ourselves, no one bothered to show us where our table was. We stood around for about 10 minutes confused because apparently Pangaea didn’t train their hostesses or waitresses or WHOEVER the hell they hired—to show their clients to their table—- great way to start the night.
I went downstairs, asked the unnamed “VIP hostess” where our reservation was, she proceeded to mock me and ask me “What was the name on the table?” Then pulled out a map and told me “table 23, up the stairs to the left” (which in fact isnt table 23). Once again, no escort to the table.
I finally went up to 3 different men in “suits” with earpeices (for a second there I thought I was at JET), and none of them knew were table 23 was, or who I could talk to to find out where our table was.
We finally asked one of the girls who is dating one of the many “partners” who apparently booked our tables for us, and she told us that “they would try to accomodate us.” As she was telling us this, I looked around and noticed over 10 empty tables…
Once we finally said forget it and joined a table with our other friends, the waitress lost our credit card, and wouldn’t serve any of the vodka or champagne until she had another one on file.
I really like the plastic cups too, and the 49 cent ice scoop, or maybe the ice bucket that seconds as a bottle holder. If you’re going to charge what you do for a bottle of Vodka, AND charge a bottle minimum, atleast buy nice glassware, and don’t make your tables wait 25 minutes to get a drink.
-
We left Pangaea, and within a text to Jen and 2 minutes later, had a table set up at GRUV with ballons, ice, AND I’m sure had we gotten lost on the way in, they would have been more than willing to WALK US to our table in VIP.
I know a lot of my friends work at Pangaea and if you do, don’t take this personally, unless I PERSONALLY called you out on your lack of customer service tonight.
See you at the club!! :-)

The Pangaea manager/promoter writes:
“You liberal pretenders aren’t liberal at all, you’re terrified conservatives.”
You open up a club blocks away from where George W Bush governed for years, in a downtown where you still see real men wear cowboy hats, in a city where Karl Rove has an office, in the middle of a state that is the biggest red state in the nation and then are suprised it’s not limosine liberal LA? Do some homework next time before you make a 3 million dollar investment.

Anyone that doesn’t understand why Austin isn’t warming up to Pangaea should just leave and move to NYC. I’m sure the concept works when Michael Ault opens in a Hard Rock Cafe or a wannabe city, but Austin doesn’t wanna be anybody else but Austin. And the Hard Rock Cafe concept is already a proven failure here. If you don’t like how Austin is, then pack your bags and move somewhere else instead of trying to change it.
