About Sol Art: Imagine a neighborhood of architect-designed, environmentally conscious
homes, on 5 acres surrounded by mature live oaks‹only three miles from
downtown. And then imagine the party that might take place should such a
concept get off the groundŠwith artists, filmmakers, writers, photographers,
musicians, and other creative souls in full celebration mode. That¹s what
you¹ll find the weekend of November 18-19, when, as part of the East Austin
Studio Tour (E.A.S.T.), more than 18 artists -- including Sybil Miller, Amy
Grappell, Heidi Stanfield, Sean Gaulager, and Peter Tucker, will present
SOL-ART, a large-scale, collaborative installation on five acres in East
Austin, on Perry Road.
The development, called SOL, or Solutions Oriented Living, will be the
first zero energy community in the U.S, meaning each of the homes will
produce as much energy as it consumes over the course of a year. The project
is the brainchild of Chris Krager and Associates who have dedicated their
craft to sustainable, affordable stylish design in and around Austin. There
will be 38+ houses in the development and construction will begin in
December with the houses ready for occupancy by October 2008.
To raise awareness for the project, Chris, along with his wife, Amy
Grappell, a filmmaker; and Sybil Miller, a photographer and photography
professor at St. Edward¹s University; gathered their friends and fellow
artists to set up what promises to be the East Austin Studio Tour¹s most
talked about event, SOL-ART. And it¹s free.
Artwork, ranging from photographs, paintings, interactive video, and
mixed-media pieces, will occupy two 70-year homes on the property, as well
as four 8 by 40-feet shipping containers, which were brought to the tract
especially for the event. Daytime live music by Cole Stanfield and numerous
interactive installations make SOL-ART a kid-friendly spot on the tour. And
come nighttime, an opening party with music by DJ Kirk will spin the party
into high gear. Once it gets going, after all, creativity is sustainable.
You¹ll see.
