While they may seem like an overnight success,Silversun Pickups have actually caught on at glacial pace. Formed in 2000, the L.A. group didn’t have a website, T-shirts, or even a record to sell until an EP came out in 2005. What the Pickups did have was a considerable live following, and 2006’s Carnavas made good on that long and artful gestation, flagging through sheets of sound woven from alternately shimmering and crunchy guitars, ghostly synths, and a rhythm section that likes things thick. Then came its surprise hit single, the Smashing Pumpkins-esque “Lazy Eye,” which left the group busily touring the world for much of the last year, opening for diverse acts like Wolfmother, Snow Patrol, and Foo Fighters and crowding onto mainstream radio playlists. The band headlines this sold-out show as part of 101X’s Workforce Xmas alongside a crop of Austin’s finest, including Spoonman Britt Daniel, Barsuk breakouts What Made Milwaukee Famous, and dance-rock demigods The Lemurs.
