After debuting in 2003 with E. Von Dahl Killed The Locals, an album that was pop-punk enough to attract the attention of Epitaph Records—which reissued it the following year—The Matches came back in 2006 with the expansive and much more interesting Decomposer. With the assistance of nine different producers, including Rancid’s Tim Armstrong, Goldfinger’s John Feldmann, and Mark Hoppus of Blink-182 fame, Decomposer ended up sounding as much like Green Day as it did Oingo Boingo, but it didn’t help the band blow up the way leader Shawn Harris assumed it would. Maybe the third time’s a charm: The Matches are preparing to release their third (and appropriately titled) album, A Band In Hope. Headliner Sherwood’s more-pop-than-emo style is remarkably assured without being obnoxiously cocky. Also playing: The Higher, We Shot The Moon.

The quintet swirls around Healy's contortions and aerobics, coding synth-punk paeans to forefathers Devo, and its cover of Red Krayola's "Hurricane Fighter Plane" alone is worth getting some bodily fluids on ya. Healy and friends channel that energy into a debut on the local Business Deal Records soon. – Audra Schroeder
