Capping off a long week of festing with free shows? Yes, Beerland knows what’s best for you, and it’s all local, no waiting. Friday, Total Abuse thrashes out some uvula-shaking hardcore from latest vinyl slab Sex Pig, along with scream-prone miscreants the Teeners and the Gospel Truth. Saturday, pop-rock trio Poor People gets their dancing shoes shined just in time for headliners the Crack Pipes. – Audra Schroeder
about 1 year ago. It’s been a while since garage-punk combo The Crack Pipes tore up the Beerland stage, but the band has never been far from it’s heart: The club has hosted several benefits over the past year for guitarist Billy Steve Korpi, who was diagnosed with both leukemia and, perhaps worst of all, starving musicianitis. But this is a night for banishing black thoughts, and there’s no better way to do it than with the whiskey-fried soul of Rev. Ray Pride and Co. Testifying with ass-shaking gospel and coughing up chunks of gutbucket blues, The Crack Pipes offer a head-clearing hit of righteous religion masquerading as seedy rhythm, making attendance as compulsory as church on a Sunday.
