Say what you will about Beerland, but the Red River punk club takes care of its own. Case in point: Tonight’s tribute to local scene favorite Mike Rodriguez, whose annual birthday show is always a non-stop orgy of retro ditties and dirty dancing. The Strange Boys headlines with a wise-beyond-its-years mix of nicotine-stained folk and Greenwich Village garage, supported by sashays and sweet girl-group harmonies from The Carrots and raunchy prom rock from Alright Tonight. While past birthday shows have featured an all-male stripper revue, Rodriguez says he’s tired of pressuring his friends into dancing–although he adds, “But I’m not gonna turn away any cute dude who wants to whip it out and show me.” So if you’re bringing a gift, don’t bother to wrap it. Also playing: Ripe. –The Onion

Two nights, two birthdays, and 10 million pounds of sludge from Austin. Friday night kicks off Beerland fixture Mike Rod’s birthday party with the Strange Boys’ slow burn, Alright Tonight’s basement party, and the Carrots’ girl-group glee. Ripe opens. Saturday night, Beerland owner Randall Stockton joins in celebration with nuthin’ but rock: Those Peabodys, Hex Dispensers, and Attack Formation, with Party Garbage starting off on a sloppy note. Dance, drink, and buy the boys a beer. – Darcie Stevens, Austin Chronicle
