Event Details
40 Acres Fest is the largest student run event in the nation, with the motto “by students, for students”, that entails live musical performances and University student organizations activity booths all day. In its 16th year, the festival just keeps getting bigger and bigger. It is a day which has outgrown its beginnings where now thousands of citizens and students in and around the city, area, and University can enjoy carnival games provided by student organizations and live music performances by local and student bands. To kick off 40 Acres Fest, Alpha Phi Omega will release and drop the Texas Flag in front of the UT Tower right at 12:00PM. 40 Acres Fest booths in prior years have included Dance Dance Revolution, Guitar Hero, dunking booths, cotton candy, obstacle courses, Bevo (school mascot), Smokey the Cannon, car smashing, Bungee Run, Fly Wall, and many, many more. This year, in conjunction with the Music & Entertainment Committee of the Student Events Center of the Texas Union, our headliner for our evening concert will be ‘The Roots’. Prior headliners at 40 Acres Fest have included Jerry Jeff Walker, Common, Ludacris, Vertical Horizon, Cee Lo, Bubba Sparxxx, Young Gunz, Ryan Cabrera, and Little Richard. The event is put on with funding from The University Cooperative (University Co-Op).

Philadelphia’s The Roots gained a fiendish following with shows that pair rap’s verbal onslaught with the naturalistic air of live instrumentation, and their reputation has only grown. Their last album, 2006’s Game Theory, featured a dark, serious tone inspired by events like Hurricane Katrina and the ongoing unrest in the Middle East, but The Roots still celebrate good times onstage—or at least serious ones made good by an excess of energy. Appearing here behind the upcoming Rising Down, the group closes out a day of free music and collegiate carnival fun at UT’s annual 40 Acres Fest. (For the full lineup, click HERE)
