Frog Eyes singer/mastermind Carey Mercer makes Colin Meloy seem like a schoolmarm. Both have a highly affected literary bent, but while The Decemberists singer keeps his bookish universe tightly contained album to album, Mercer's spills out unchecked, filling his lilting, wiry songs to the brim and overflowing the borders of records, like 2007's Tears Of The Valedictorian. The group, which features Mercer's wife, Melanie Campbell, on drums, plays soupy, hyper indie rock that bends and swirls to its master's deranged call. (Imagine David Bowie preaching hermetic fire and brimstone while on speed). Evangelicals plays sprawling, expansive rock that's similarly weird. The band's recent The Evening Descends favors buzzy psychedelia while flirting with a lazy, atmospheric hush that comes across well on record, but bodes even better for the live show. Opening: White Hinterland.
