Honky Tonk Heartbreakers vs Hotrod Honeys and Hell Marys vs NWA Rollergirls (Northwest Arkansas)

Roller derby burns up Playland Sunday, July 6th!

Roller derby fans—what’s the only thing hotter than Texas in July? Why, it’s blazing flat track derby action, of course! 

This bout is gonna be a scorcher as the flamealicious Hell Marys host the Northwest Arkansas Killbillies. Straight outta Springdale, these NWA girls come to represent the Ozarks, but they will have to take out the Hell Marys’ demon defense and stealth-like jamming if they want to win!

The next bout of the night pits old rivals duking it out for a spot in the championship game. Longtime enemies the Honk Tonk Heartbreakers and Hotrod Honeys square off in a skating battle royale. The Hotrods are undefeated in 2008 and are poised to win it all, but the Heartbreakers have beaten them twice in championship play. There is no love lost between these two teams: This game is bound to be a bloody, sweaty death match, so be sure to come early and get your seats right up close to the action!

In celebration of Rollergirls’ most important appendages, July’s bout showcases Austin band Foot Patrol—the world’s only funk band with a foot fetish. Fronted by singer and keyboard extraordinaire T.J. Wade, these local boys who love feet will be sure to make you get up on yours.

And, because there is no such thing as too much beer, libations and good times will be available at the always-rockin’ afterparty, hosted this month by the Scoot Inn (located at 1308 E. 4th St).

Texas Rollergirls love to have a good time but also love to give back to their community. The spotlight charity for this bout is Safeplace, an organization that exists to end sexual and domestic violence through safety, healing, prevention and social change. Their services include emergency shelter, a 24-hour hotline, hospital accompaniment programs, legal services, extensive counseling services, transitional housing, advocacy and life skills training.
