A founding member of At The Drive-In and the frontman of Sparta, singer-guitarist Jim Ward knows how to pack a sonic punch. But he’s got a tender side, too; for the past few years he’s been releasing a trickle of solo songs on compilations that show more of the rustic side he brings to his sporadically active side project Sleepercar. The band’s recent debut, West Texas, is a full-bodied and confident expression of Ward’s guitar-and-piano-drenched pop tunes, twangy epics that fall somewhere between those of Wilco and Radiohead. Memphis punk-country outfit Lucero headlines behind 2006’s Rebels, Rogues & Sworn Brothers.
