In an era when the majority of hip-hop music dominating the mainstream sounds like it was all stamped out in the same factory, The Cool Kids came out of nowhere last year with a style that is as familiar as it is fresh. Leading the pack of the new wave of Chicago hip-hoppers, The Cool Kids are charging ahead by looking back and re-energising old-school influences. The duo is made up of Antoine "Mikey Rocks" Reed and Evan "Chuck Inglish", and combined they are successfully subverting rap’s well-worn agenda. OkayPlayer had this to say on their most recent effort" "the beats are minimalist and heavily synthesized, and the lyrics are playful and fun, and best of all, the music is party friendly and reminiscent of a young LL Cool J or Beastie Boys." That is some high praise indeed. DJ Mel and FREE SOL help get the party started.

Chicago hip-hop duo The Cool Kids (Mikey Rocks and Chuck Inglish), stirred the sheets in 2007 with well-received live shows and a sleepy, bass-burbling single called “Black Mags.” This year will almost certainly be their breakout: They’ve signed to Chocolate Industries, an underground hip-hop label with releases by Money Mark, Vast Aire, and Lady Sovereign, and they have an uncommonly dexterous way of infusing boom-bap beats with clever rhymes and hipster cool. The Cool Kids will play here in support of their long-delayed debut, The Bake Sale. Opening: Free Sol, DJ Mel.

“88” is hardly a coincidental track name. With its dawn-of-Def Jam bang clamoring through June’s The Bake Sale EP, Chi-Town’s Cool Kids drop enough kick-snare minimalism to throw James Todd Smith for a loop. Out banging elbows with hip-hop’s elite on this summer’s Rock the Bells tour, Mikey Rocks and Chuck Inglish split their Windy City time shopping fly gear and laying bars for When Fish Ride Bicycles, due out this fall. – Chase Hoffberger more at austinchronicle.com
