The Stick Wigglies were formed in Houston in 1996 by Karlito (Moog) and Mr. Suit (Vocals). The original band sounded a little like Devo in 1974. Karlito recruited his friend Devin to play bass, and Devin's friend Sarah Greed wanted to play drums. Surprisingly, the first incarnation of the Stick Wigglies had no guitar player. Songs from this era included "I'm Not" and "The Ballad of Mr. Suit and Karlito." If you ever heard these played live then you are a real fan. In June 1996, the Sticks added Kyle G. Otis on guitar and the real sound of the band began to take shape. Sort of a "Sounds of '77" punk attack augmented with Karlito's electronic musings. Kyle G. Otis left pretty quickly to focus on his main band Sugar Shack. Kyle was replaced by Rice University student Behrang "Bill" Amini. Bill never quite figured out he was in a punk band and the band was made uncomfortable by periodic invitations to hang out with his parents. So the split was inevitable. So in 1997 Bill left and was replaced by Tom. Tom became the group's sonic center and the Stick Wigglies sound was complete. The group was most active between 1997 and 2001. They played many Houston and Austin venues and released two independent efforts: The Stick Wigglies Drink Tall Boys at Steve's and The Stick Wigglies Live at Garden in the Heights." They were known for their classic punk sound, Sarah Greed's fashion sense and tight drumming, Devin's killer snarl and thunder bass, Tom's Gretsch guitar roar, and Mr. Suit's bizarre and unpredictable stage antics. They never broke up, but just kind of stopped playing. One show was organized in 2003 but Mr. Suit was so out of control on stage and off that the others decided they were done with him. The Sticks are returning to the Austin stage on August 30, 2008 at Room 710. Don't miss it.
