Grimy Styles plays an experimental mix of dub/reggae with sounds ranging from jazz and funk to world music. Their regular gigs at the Flamingo Cantina always keep people coming back for more, so they are obviously doing it right. See for yourself on Saturday night.
Ohn pulls the old school from the back of the closet for a special set at Flamingo Cantina with Grimy Styles this Saturday, September 13th. If you have only tuned in to Ohn during the last year, let me offer some insight into a band that has delivered some of the city’s best music compositions. If you have never heard of the group, visit their site and snap a clue. The boys (and gal) are good. Damn good.
Formed in 2003, the band was formed by Bill “Billdeaux” Sarver, a producer that has worked with artists such as Jarboe (The Swanns), Riggs (Rob Zombie), Interscope artist Soak, and Laura Scarborough. Joining together an impressive team of musicians including Chris Forshage (guitar, horn), Brad Houser (bass, sax), and new vocalist Allison Sharf, Ohn’s music has always been the picture of perfection as programed elements like drums and effects delicately support the live arrangement of bass, horns, guitars, and vocals. The result, a true electro-acoustic experience where every details is perfectly crafted for the best of shows.
The band’s first two albums, Let’s Get It… and In The End All Things Begin, represent an era in the band’s history where the combination of electronic experimentation with tradition instrumentation was a feat of engineering, especially in a live setting. Through these releases, Ohn took the listener on a psychedelic journey that can only be experienced in its full effect through their live performances. Lucky you! These compositions will be featured live this Saturday night.
