If skills sold, Talib Kweli would have been one of the most commercially successful rappers of his time. As it was, however, the earnest MC became one of the most critically successful rappers of his time, which dawned in the late '90s when he rapped alongside Mos Def and DJ Hi-Tek as part of the group Black Star. He later continued on his own solo output releasing three critically acclaimed solo albums, the most recent featuring guests like Norah Jones, UGK, Justin Timberlake, and Strong Arm Steady. The latter helps open his show at Emo's on Wednesday.

It’s rare that the ATH gives much mention to hip-hop, but when an artist like Talib Kweli comes to town, we’ve got to get the word out. more at austintownhall.com

AA-S Best Bet - Talib Kweli: The less famous half of the hip-hop duo Black Star (his old partner is Mos Def), Kweli has produced album after solid album of smart, earnest hip-hop. more at www.austin360.com

Talib Kweli..one of the realest MC's in hip hop world visiting the ATX to drop knowledge and flavor. BEing backed up by some of Austin's premiere MC's in Zeale, and Traygod make this show even better.

It’s somewhat ironic that lyrical ability never translates to fame or fortune in the hip-hop world: While Jay-Z once fantasized that, “If skills sold, truth be told, I’d probably be / lyrically, Talib Kweli,” the former Black Star rapper himself has never approached the breakout success that all those shout-outs should rightfully have garnered him by now. more at austin.decider.com
