One of the highlights of last year’s Austin City Limits Music festival happened when Sharon Jones pulled a young man named Nakia onstage for an impromptu duet. Jones quickly discovered what the cheering crowd already knew – he was one of Austin’s brightest new stars. His debut album Water to Wine is brimming with southern-fried soul and R&B, and backed by a band full of veteran musicians he has toured nationally and appearanced at various festivals including SXSW. The music is a blend of influences rooted in old-school soul, Allman-Skynyrd rock and his Southern Baptist, Appalachian foothills upbringing. You can catch Nakia & His Southern Cousins at Stubb's on Friday after the Spoon show.
