During the late 1980s, Robert Cray was among artists such as Stevie Ray Vaughan and George Thorogood who got wider radio airplay and regular MTV video exposure. He started playing guitar in his early teens, and by the time he was twenty Cray had seen his heroes Albert Collins, Freddie King and Muddy Waters in concert, and decided to form his own band. With Cray on the lead his band started playing college towns along the west coast, and after several years of regional success Cray was signed to Mercury Records. He has gone on to win four Grammy Awards, the most recent in 1999 for his masterful blues album Take Your Shoes Off. See him in person at Antone's on Friday with JJ Usher, Doc and the Medicine Man.
