101216 <p>Singer-songwriter John Darnielle's folk-rock project The Mountain Goats has been a mainstay of the lo-fi scene since 1991, but it wasn't until their most recent work that he started receiving mainstream attention. Their exquisitely produced, introspective indie rock rarely fails to impress critics and fans alike. The New Yorker magazine referred to him as &ldquo;America&rsquo;s best non-hip-hop lyricist&rdquo;. In its June 2006 issue, Paste magazine named Darnielle one of the &ldquo;100 Best Living Songwriters&rdquo;. Darnielle&rsquo;s lyrics are literate and filled with imagery that reference classic literature, religion and mythologies, pop culture, art and history.
