On June 14, fifty girls with varying musical experience—from absolute beginners to rock-n-roll prodigies—will arrive at Girls Rock Camp Austin. Over the next six days, they will learn their instruments, form bands, write original material, and perform in front of an adoring crowd. In the process, they’ll communicate, collaborate, negotiate conflict, conquer challenges, and gain confidence.
Girls Rock Camp Austin is the only non-profit camp where Austin’s accomplished female musicians teach girls (ages 11-17) in a supportive, non-competitive environment. Funds for scholarships are raised through an end-of-session public concert where campers perform their newly minted songs. Styles range from pop to punk, but the musical and lyrical perspectives are always fresh. It’s not unusual to see audience members in tears, even as they pump their fists or bounce to the beat.
