Beer, barbeque, and country music–the three staples that most people would argue DEFINE our great state and the three things that (when combined) make up a pretty kick-ass, Texas-style July 4th festival. Yes, JULY 4TH is almost upon us, and while we have a long list of patriotic parties that you should check out, the 2nd Annual Brew-B-Que Festival is one not to be overlooked. Set in the City Park of Buda, Texas (a town about 13 miles from Austin), this July 4th Fest is an annual BBQ Cook-Off and Beer Festival that will no doubt exceed your expectations with entertainment from top country artists, free food, lumberjacks, chihuahua races, beer games, and a stellar firework show (duh). From 11 AM to 11 PM, come celebrate July 4th “the Texas way” at the 2nd Annual Brew-B-Que Fest.

BEER FESTIVAL

The name says it all. Brew-B-Que Fest is partially a beer tasting event that sees both professional and home brewers showcasing their creations and discussing the art of brewing Texas’ favorite beverage. Throughout the fest, $9 sample trays will be available, allowing patrons to sample 6 beers (in 4 oz servings), and beer games will go on throughout the day, giving you the chance to exhibit your skills in games like Washers, Quarters, Darts, Horseshoes, Coaster Flipping, Empty Keg Tossing, Beer Trivia, Beer Belly Competition, Beer Pong and more. To top it all off, Austin Home Brew will be on stage doing 2 live brewing demonstrations and fielding a Q&A session.

BBQ COOK-OFF

5,000 POUNDS OF FREE BBQ! That’s enough to sell me right there. Barbeque being the “unofficial” state food of Texas (and BBQ being the other half of the festival’s title), it is only fitting that this fest has a BBQ challenge. Pitting (no pun intended) teams against each other to see who can make the best finger-lickin’ food in central Texas, the challenge will be filmed for a full length documentary on BBQ techniques, teams, and beer. For a team entry fee of $100, you get 150 lbs. of meat, but make sure you register NOW because the deadline is June 30th.

[To find out how to register... head over to the Do512 page and download the application!]

MUSICAL ENTERTAINMENT

If the beer and the BBQ are simply not enough to make you happy, the festival is hosting SIX amazing country acts throughout the day.

The Line-Up:

12:30-1:30 Ryan Beaver

2:00-3:00 Mark McKinney

3:30-4:30 Sean McConnell

5:00-6:30 Jason Boland & The Stragglers

7:00-8:30 Cory Morrow

[9:30-9:50 FIREWORKS SHOWWWW]

9:50-11:00 Jeremy Miller Band

OTHER GAMES

And that’s not all. Added to the number of drinking games that will be played throughout the day, a LUMBERJACK SHOW is taking place (featuring chainsaw racing, obstacle pole racing, world champion cross-cut sawing, log rolling, spring board chopping, standing block chopping, underhand chopping, and more) along with the chance to see little rat dogs (aka Chihuahuas) race to receive prizes.

[To register for any of the games, head over to the Brew-B-Que website]

This event was poorly done. We arrived at 4p with my family of 4 and paid our admission. We proceeded to join the enormous line to get BBQ only to find that there was only 3 trailers open of the ONLY 6 trailers that were supposed to be available. So we waited in line for over an hour for a few bits of BBQ. To make matters worse, I left my family to get waters and again stood in a long line at the ONLY trailer selling water. (Hundreds (possibly over a thousand) of people and only one tiny trailer selling water.) When I got to the front of the line, the attendant stated that they had run out of water. 96 degrees outside, 4 hours into an all-day and night event and they were OUT of water!! absolutely ridiculous. The people were not courteous, the BBQ took too long to taste, and there just wasn't enough. I would NEVER recommend attending this event.
