It’s been ten years since Atari Teenage Riot last performed their politically-charged noise, but now on the heels of their new single “Activate!,” the German electro-punks have announced a few North American reunion dates this fall. The brief U.S. tour will include a stop in Austin at Red 7 on Monday, September 27. Atari Teenage Riot emerged in the 90s with a newly emerging techno sound called digital hardcore, blurring hardcore punk, jungle, noise, and bloodcurdling screaming, initially making a name for themselves with live shows that were characterized by violence and arrests. The band quickly attracted a large (and famous) following, signing to the Beastie Boys’ Grand Royal record label, and touring with the likes of Beck, Rage Against the Machine, and the Wu-Tang Clan.
The band released three albums in eight years, recording their final album ’60 Second Wipe Out’ in 1999 with Andy Wallace, known for his work with the likes of Faith No More, Nirvana, and The Cult. The band fell apart in 2000, and has been effectively disbanded since founding member Carl Crack died of a drug overdose in 2001. In January of 2010 it was announced that Atari Teenage Riot would reunite for a few live shows in Europe, which turned into additional shows in Europe, North America, and Asia.
They still boast two original members, Alec Empire and Nic Endo, along with one newcomer, the mohawk-topped American MC CX Kidtronik. Proving to be more than just a half-hearted re-emergence, a brand new Atari Teenage Riot track titled “Activate” was released in March of this year via SoundCloud:

Germany’s once and future kings of anarcho noise punk deleted themselves 10 years ago, effectively leaving the planet without an appropriate soundtrack for descent into endless war fear. That 240 bpm squall-shriek you hear is ATR’s incendiary reactivation, and new single “Activate” concusses like Lisbeth Salander’s CT scan set to the black bang of a hacked IED.
