"Syntrophy" includes new assemblage and sculptural works by Jamie Spinello and a new installation by Kristen Van Patten at the Gallery Black Lagoon. Jamie and Kristen both have common threads of interest in exploring symbiotic relationships in nature, creating works that can be experienced both two and three dimensionally, and structures that pull from coinciding ideas in the sciences.

Jamie Spinello layers woven shapes and lines to create cross sections and specimens inspired by growth patterns, processes of erosion, and skeletal forms. She draws upon structural relationships between the organic and geological world through combined processes of drawing, painting, cutting, folding and pinning. Dioramas, miniature models of buildings, aquariums, and paper theaters were sources for creative play and imagination as a child and influence her working process. She shares this by dissecting the experience of perception between two-dimensional and three-dimensional forms that are reminiscent of systems in nature. www.jamiespinello.com

Kristen Van Patten is driven by his interest in invention, discovery and man's interaction with natural and man-made structures and where they overlap.  Structure, space, and line make up a vocabulary from which he creates objects, primarily manifested in a modular way. Each piece within the interrelated systems and networks has a specific function and purpose, analogous to a self-reliant habitat responding to stimuli in order to stabilize its self.  His work expresses this relationship with our surroundings. www.kristenvanpatten.com
