STEREO IS A LIE
With Pulp re-learning “Common People” for its upcoming summer dates and the members of Blur hinting at another reunion, the time is right for a fresh slab of towering, swaggering Britpop. Of course, you wouldn’t expect Austin to be the epicenter of the new Cool Britannia—unless you’ve been closely following Stereo Is A Lie for the last two years. Led by immigrant Englishman Glynn Wedgewood, the band delivers heroic hooks and jet-scream guitars on its new, self-titled debut—the release of which is celebrated here. Continuing where the soaring-yet-sneering single “It’s Too Late” leaves off, Wedgewood and his bandmates have crafted an album with an attitude that’s all U.K.—with Texas-sized melodic heft. -A.V. Club (Austin)
New Roman Times
Currently based out of Austin, New Roman Times is lead by Daniel Owens on vocals and guitar. Providing the seductive backing vocals (some of the best moments on the album) is the pretty girl bassist Josie Fluri. The band is rounded out with Mike Allen on drums and Harris Thurmond on guitar and synths. Much like The Killers, Interpol, White Lies and other post-punk/new wave revivalists, the tunes of New Roman Times can send you dancing to the rhythm or soul searching through the lyrics. -Stereo Subversion
The Ripe
"The Ripe" emerges from yesterday's roots of power-pop, folk & psychedelia while currently pulling inspiration from our world today. Formed in 2007 the Austin, TX group consists of Nick Yaklin on drums, Jake Garcia vocals/guitar, Gian Ortiz on vocals/bass and Erick Olesen on Guitar/Fender Rhodes. From the energy of 70's power-pop groups such as "Big Star" and ultimately striving to sound like a live version of The Beatles "White Album" on stage, it was also the inspiration of Arthur Lee's lucid song writing from the album "Forever Changes" and a shared love for "The Kinks" that drove the group from the beginning. As a result, "The Ripe" have just recently recorded a full length album on vintage BBC and Abbey Road gear in Gijon, Spain at Circo Perrotti Studios in September of 2010. Keep an eye peeled;)
The Town Hall Devils
"We met on rain slick roads when terrible things were being said about common folks."

The Pons
The Pons are currently working on our second full-length record "The Blackest Shine" slated for a early Summer 2011 release. We are recording with Erik Wofford at Cacophony Recorders in Austin. The Pons are Ruby Painter, Thomas Mazzi & Steve Sanders. Our friend and sometimes 4th member Joel Mullins will add his black & white keys to this affair as well. Stay tuned. In Erik's words, "It's a classic".
One Hundred Flowers
"...the sort of beast that bedroom visionaries dream about but rarely manage: two female vocalists and keyboard players creating beautiful harmonies alongside a workmanlike rhythm section. This synthesis of cold power with beauty is reflected in the title of One Hundred Flowers’ Mechanical Bride, as it’s a record that combines sober, thoughtful songwriting with winning hooks and arrangements that retain their sweetness—but it staves off the cutesy." -A.V. Club (Austin)
Intimate Stranger
With the exception of the metal underground, we tend to ignore bands from non-English-speaking countries, unless there’s a Top 40 fluke, like Shocking Blue’s “Venus.” Being fascinated by international music, I was interested to hear this band from Chile who, with their sophomore effort, should easily cross over into domestic acceptance. Under is an album of dreamy indie rock informed by the likes of Stereolab, Kim Deal’s bands and perhaps Joy Division. The music is similar to what Interpol or The Happy Hollows are doing, but all comparisons aside, it’s the finely crafted songs that make Intimate Stranger stand out among their peers. Big take over Magazine. (NY)
Western Ghost House
The sound of Austin’s up and coming band, Western Ghost House, has been compared to that of The Velvet Underground, Modest Mouse, and Violent Femmes with rich lyrical content similar to Sunset Rubdown and Bill Callahan. Music lovers will enjoy puzzling over their contemplative, esoteric sound. The quartet released a self-titled E.P. in 2010 and is currently recording a full-length record set to be released in the spring of 2011. A national tour is scheduled to begin July, 2011.
