On April 29th, Bemba pays homage to Chaka Khan and Teddy Pendergrass. One might think there is a deep, philosophical reason for combining a tribute to these two soul legends. In actuality, Bemba Entertainment’s Founder/Owner Brandon Badillo and Bemba Family Soul’s front woman Sonia Moore had differences of opinion. Brandon wanted to have an accolade to Teddy Pendergrass, while Sonia wanted one to Chaka Khan. Brandon, being a true visionary, decided to do both on the same night. As it turns out, there is in fact a deep, philosophical reason for celebrating Khan and Pendergrass on the same bill. “I listen to music and get a vision of how I'd like to see it, hear it, and feel it,” says Badillo. He adds, “I am recreating history so I can experience it for the first time…and I invite people to share this experience with me. I want to create something that entices integration.” Badillo inspires integration on many levels. When you walk into Momo’s on West 6th Street for a Soul Legends night, it is not the usual crowd of hipsters or foodies. Brandon Badillo has managed to make the African American soul and R&B music world come alive in a place you’d least expect it – he has brought Motown to Clarksville. And you see people of many different colors and ages and socio-economic backgrounds. On top of that, he’s magically found the unifying spirit between Khan and Pendergass, and his own mission with Bemba Entertainment. Both of these soul legends have struggled through extremely difficult challenges, but they remained positive, and ultimately gave back to the community. In his own work, Badillo always finds a way to give back to the Austin community. By the end of the 1970s, with sold-out audiences packing his shows, Teddy Pendergrass (best known as the lead singer of Harold Melvin & the Blue Notes) noticed that a majority of his fans consisted of women of all races, so they started a trend that continues today called “women's only concerts.” In 1982, he became paralyzed in an auto accident, inspiring him to found the Teddy Pendergrass Alliance, a foundation that helps those with spinal cord injuries because he believed “the quality of one's life is so important.” After his injury, he went on to receive three Grammy Award nominations, perform at the historic Live Aid concert in Philadelphia in 1985, release his autobiography Truly Blessed in 1998, and motivate citizens to vote in the 2004 presidential elections with his song “Wake Up Everybody.” Chaka Khan, singer and composer who gained fame in the 1970s as the front woman of the funk band Rufus, was raised in Chicago’s rough Southside projects. In her early years, she was part of the social activist Black Panther Party, an organized a free breakfast program for children. Later in life, Khan struggled with drug abuse, alcoholism and weight over the years, but never gave up in her fight – winning the battle in 2005. She started the Chaka Khan Foundation to educate, inspire and empower children in the Los Angeles community to achieve their full potential, with the vision of giving children who are at risk, either through poverty or through health issues like autism, the ability to achieve their dreams and give back to the community. Khan’s signature hits, both with Rufus and as a solo performer, include “Tell Me Something Good”, “Sweet Thing”, “Ain't Nobody,” “I'm Every Woman”, “I Feel for You” and “Through the Fire”. Opening for the April Soul Legends Series is Monophonics, which has staked its claim as San Francisco Bay Area’s premier funk/soul band. Raised amid the city’s rich musical culture, these young musicians proudly carry on the tradition of music native to their hometown. The result is psychedelic soul & heavy duty funk, which harks back to the styling of the late 60s and early 70s, all while keeping its feet planted in the present and an inventive ear bent toward the future. This emerging band has created a national buzz and fervent local following, sharing the stage with groups such as as Soulive, Macy Gray, Budos Band, George Porter, Archie Bell, Blues Traveler, Dirty Dozen Brass Band, Dumpstafunk, and Idris Muhammad.
