Tapestry Dance Company has announced plans for its 12th Anniversary "Soul to Sole Festival," slated for May 28th through June 3rd. The annual, week-long festival of rhythm will also include the first annual Choreography Conference, bringing dancers from around the country to Austin and the home of the International Tap Association.
The week of activities will feature more than 75 master classes, nine choreography courses, tap jams, panel discussions and concert performances at The Long Center that celebrate the indigenous American art form. A highlight this year will be "The Process," 11 in-depth lectures and demonstrations that will go into the mind of the artists.
The faculty of critically-acclaimed artists will Tapestry's co-founder Acia Gray and featured dancer Matt Shields, along with international stars Sarah Petronio (Paris), Michelle Dorrance and Nicholas Young (NYC), Jay Fagan (Chicago), Katherine Kramer (Rhythm Explosion), Travis Knights (Tap Dogs and Tapestry Dance Company), Barbara Phillips (San Antonio's RPM) and LeeLa Petronio of France's HipTap Project. The Souls of Our Feet Jazz Trio will also participate in the one-of-a-kind festival that will combine swinging jazz and the rhythm of hundreds of feet.
Founded in 1989, Tapestry Dance Company continues as a professional, non-profit dance organization for developing a foundation in multi-form dance performance and education. Home to North America's only full-time professional tap dance company, the organization hosts seasonal multi-form concerts at The Long Center, community outreach programs such as "Rhythm, Dance, Music and You!," numerous master classes and workshops in modern, jazz, ballet and rhythm tap as well as touring residencies throughout the world. The company's recent NEA Masterpiece production of The Souls of Our Feet - A Celebration of American Tap Dance toured The People's Republic of China for five weeks in October 2011 and is scheduled to return in 2012.
The "Soul to Sole Festival" classes and courses will run May 28th through June 3rd at the Tapestry Dance Company in South Austin. On June 1st at 8 p.m., the Rhythm Showcase will play Rollins Studio Theatre at The Long Center. The following night at 8 p.m., the Friends in Time Faculty Concert will take the Rollins Theatre stage.
