From BOOGIE NIGHTS to THERE WILL BE BLOOD, the theatrical release of any new P.T. Anderson movie basically marks a new chapter in cinema. Hollywood's flimsy veil of bleached smiles and superhero spandex is thrown aside to illuminate uniquely told stories of flawed humans destined for triumph and/or agony. And no project of his has been as wildly anticipated -- and scrutinized -- as THE MASTER.
PhilIp Seymour Hoffman is Lancaster Dodd, a self-made, self-absorbed and self-doubting paragon of intellect; a magnanimous socialite who's prone to thunderous episodes. His writings are devoted to exploring mankind's untapped potential, to the point that he seems intent on elevating himself and everyone around him to a superhuman level.
Into his expanding circle stumbles Freddie Sutton (Joaquin Phoenix), a living storm of total self-destruction. The two men appear opposite in every way, but their meeting ignites a persevering mutual fascination that threatens their perceptions, their outside relationships, and even their personal well-being.
Hoffman and Phoenix are said to both give the all-time best performances of their already-incredible careers, with equally strong work from Amy Adams as Dodd's brilliant wife/business partner. Anderson's script and direction, completed with stunning 65mm photography, create the type of viewing experience that feels even more authentic and compelling than actual life. By all accounts, THE MASTER stands to be one of the rarest accomplishments possible: a perfect movie.
