It’s an age-old practice, but no one else has taken the route Ruby Jane has to get there. The Texas native, who has lived in Mississippi and now in Austin for four prolific years, is a fiddle prodigy who was the youngest fiddler ever invited to play on the Grand Ol’ Opry. She’s toured with and/or opened for Willie Nelson, Sheryl Crow, Asleep at the Wheel, Billy Gibbons of ZZ Top, Big and Rich, Blues Traveler and others. She has fronted her own band at Lollapalooza, Austin City Limits Festival twice, and has been an official SXSW artist every year since she was 12 years old. The fiddle has been Ruby Jane’s addiction since she was age two and she’s got the national titles to prove it. But, with her first-ever studio album Celebrity (empire of emptiness) hitting stores June 19, Ruby Jane goes in a bold new direction that’s closer to Neko Case and Wilco than Vasser Clements and Johnny Gimble. Such tunes as the track XXVII, inspired by the death of Amy Winehouse, show an artist making sense of her world through song. She’s growing as a mature songwriter and vocalist, but Ruby Jane still loves her fiddle and mandolin and stuns the crowd with her remarkable live performances.
