The symbiotic relationship between Austin’s burgeoning fashion scene and its forward-thinking bands continues with this runway-cum-rock show headlined by local designersLoves Mariessa, Knoxy, Model Citizen, Amy Cline Jewelry. ME-TV video jockey J.J. hosts a glamour-soaked night of pretty young things in barely there ensembles, backed up by pulse-quickening beats from DJ Rubix and three of the chicest groups in town: The Always Already’s streamlined new wave is the little black dress that never goes out of style; Ume’s torn and repurposed rags of discordant guitar are the aural equivalent of Vivienne Westwood; and The Black And White Years’ eye-catching mix of nervy art-funk and outsized dance anthems is the must-have of the season. Underground rapper Busdriver has never quite found his niche, which used to be his greatest strength—his cerebral, acrobatic lyricism challenged hip-hop conventions even when he pandered to audiences with appeals to crossover success. Having scored notoriety only among the hipster intelligentsia, however, Busdriver seems to be picking a fight with his most difficult release, 2007’s RoadKillOvercoat, on which he lashes out against “art-school kids” and “yuppie scum.” Despite its acidity, RoadKillOvercoat is a fascinating panoply of styles that sounds like nothing else out there—which means the art-school kids will love it, whether he likes it or not.
