La Chute de la Maison Usher and Chanson de Bilitis with L'Enfant Prodigue by Claude Debussy

The UT Butler Opera Center presents the world premiere of Robert Orledge’s orchestration of Chanson de Bilitis, the American premiere of La Chute de la Maison Usher (The Fall of the House of Usher) as realized by Robert Orledge and L’enfant Prodigue— an evening of three short operas by Claude Debussy October 27-November 5 in UT’s McCullough Theatre.

Presented as part of the 2006 Debussy International Congress, this student production, directed by Robert DeSimone, will introduce Austin audiences to three one-act operas spanning Debussy’s musical career from start to finish. Robert Orledge, an Emeritus Professor and Senior Research Fellow of Liverpool University, realized his ambition to complete and orchestrate La Chute de la Maison Usher in 2004 and will be in attendance opening night.

Debussy won the Prix du Rome for L’Enfant Prodigue in 1884 at age 22. In 1900 he made an addition to the French song repertoire with Chanson de Bilitis, a three-song cycle. Finally, Debussy worked on his last opera, La Chute de la Maison Usher, based on The Fall of the House of Usher by Edgar Allen Poe, for nine years up until his death in 1918. Another facet of the production: the UT symphony will play behind the singers on the McCullough stage, pushing the performers into very close proximity with the audience. The UT symphony has garnered many awards and critical acclaim, and is rapidly becoming one of the nation's most respected university orchestras. Paired with the students of the Butler Opera Center, this is an auspicious opportunity to see so much young, emerging talent in one place. Don’t miss a rare classical treat from UT Austin and the Butler Opera Center!
