"Open House" photographic works by Mary Sledd

1 15 7706 "Open House" photographic works by Mary Sledd “Open House” is a photographic instillation by Mary Sledd in a property developed by Skyline City Home.  This partnership between commerce and culture features a mix of photographic works in multiple mediums selected to simulate the décor of a living space. All works in the show were created as site specific items. Consideration to layout, furnishing and use of space was paramount in deciding what to include in the show. The bouquet of work falls into two main themes, the poles of observation and construction. Works falling into the category of observation are predominately details of larger scenes – a hat, a flower, or part of a train car. Constructed works are fake advertisements and political satires. The opening of this show will be an event not to be missed. All works will have asking prices, but buyers are encouraged to make bids. Now and Tomorrow, now in its’ 5th year, celebrates the visual and material culture of Austin area youth, featuring drawings, paintings and ceramic work.   Students from the following schools will be included in this year’s exhibition; Reagan High School, Hill Country Middle School, The University of Texas at Austin Elementary School, Maplewood Elementary School, Fannie Mae Caldwell Elementary School, Forest Trail Elementary School, Ridgetop Elementary School and the Greater Tomorrow Youth Art Program.    The exhibition, Now and Tomorrow, is produced by Greater Tomorrow Summer Art Program, an outreach program in the Visual Art Studies Division of the Department of Art and Art History, at the University of Texas at Austin. Greater Tomorrow provides supplementary art experiences for K-12 students in the public schools and within community settings. These activities provide youth participants with non-linear creative exercises that relate to everyday life experiences. Greater Tomorrow uses art education as a means of fostering analytic thinking processes that are necessary for balanced intellectual development. Greater Tomorrow also provides in-service and in-training to art teachers. Greater Tomorrow was established in 2002 by the Visual Art Studies Division of the Department of Art and Art History and the College of Fine Arts (COFA) at the University of Texas at Austin in collaboration with school art teachers, students, school administrators, community-based organizations, philanthropic organizations, professional artists, private citizens, and community leaders in Austin. Creative Research Laboratory presents a year-round schedule of exhibitions of work by students and faculty at the University of Texas at Austin, and also facilitates workshops, performances, demonstrations, seminars, and collaborations. Creative Research Laboratory is located in east Austin at 2832 East Martin Luther King, Jr. Boulevard, inside Flatbed World Headquarters.
