3rd ANNUAL AUSTIN HAUNTED FOREST TRAIL OF FEARS

3rd ANNUAL AUSTIN HAUNTED FOREST TRAIL OF FEARS
Running “For Your Life” Through The Month Of October

The Austin Enchanted Forest, located at 1412 W. Oltorf, is terrified to announce the return of their yearly October Trail of Fears. If you so dare to enter this Haunted Forest, be prepared for a horrifying experience as you creep through the hair-raising quarter mile trail filled with all of your worst nightmares. The Austin Haunted Forest is where Art meets Horror. Part twisted performance art, part wicked art installations and totally freak the bejesus out of your soul, the lunatic folks of the forest have totally outdone themselves this year. This October, in a forest in S. Austin, those who are brave enough to walk the path are going to have one hell of a gruesome time.
Come if you dare, run if you want to live, stay and you may die…
This dichotomy is significant in my work: an ever-growing accumulation versus a sincere want for containment and minimization of such.” Mutchler is Assistant Professor at the University of Texas and earned her MFA in printmaking from the Tyler School of Art, Temple University, Elkins Park, PA.

Ann Matlock: New Work & Marjorie Moore: Remains

Opening Reception: Thursday December 18 6-8pm

d berman gallery will be closed for the holidays from December 24- January 2.

d berman gallery presents new work by two Texas women artists responding through their artwork
to different aspects of their environment of the last few years.
Ann Matlock is one of the state’s most accomplished weavers. Her lush and richly colorful new
works are based on watercolors she produced during her recent travels in Europe and also Morocco,
where she taught natural dye workshops to women in Ait Hanza and Sefrou.

Marjorie Moore’s emotional, sculptural work expresses her frustration with living a comfortable
existence in Austin while military action in the middle east disrupts (and sometimes ends) life for
residents of Iraq.

Free Stop motion puppetry workshop

Geppetto Dreams Puppet Company is looking for 20 kids between 12 and 16 for their Stop Motion Puppet Program, “Ghost Stories.” The kids will be split into teams of five; each team will work on their own 2 minute short stop motion film based on the ghost story theme. This program is designed to teach a full range of stop motion puppetry arts. Storyboarding, scripting, puppet design/construction, music, set design, filming and editing. The project runs 10 weeks, starting June 11, the workshops will be held Wednesday/Thursday from 11am to 5pm.

The first week will be an orientation and brainstorming sessions the next six weeks will be devoted to production, puppet and stage design and construction, the final three weeks will be editing and DVD transfer. We intend to make sure that everyone gets a chance to work all aspects of their production. The end of the program culminates with three showings of their films, which will be offered free to the public. The showings will be held at a local venue, preferably the Long Center, and each participant will receive a copy of their film.

It is our hope that this program will provide an artistic outlet for kids giving them a chance to try a variety of different art forms at one time. Drawing, sculpture, painting, and movement are all incorporated into the program. It also teaches them to work together as a team. All our programs are an exercise in the teamwork between director, stage techs, puppeteers, and puppets. Like a machine all parts must work in unison in order to turn out the best product possible. The educational benefits include writing, science, and math skills. Finally it provides all the participants with a deep sense of satisfaction and accomplishment when a project comes together and you take your bows in front of an applauding audience.

The program is provided free of charge to kids from or visiting the Austin Community. Spaces are filling up fast so interested kids should write a short pitch (idea) for a two minute ghost movie and send it to admin@geppettodreams.com by the deadline May 30th, 2009. If you have any questions please feel free to email us or call 512 358 4632

Freefall: Chaddick returns, exploring the strength it takes to let go

Cheryl Chaddick is fiercely independent and ever curious about the fortitude of the human spirit. Hailed for an inaugural Austin production in October 2008 following 21 years throughout the San Francisco Bay Area for a profound alternate approach to dance, Chaddick Dance Theater returns to continue building a reputation of “creating wonderfully full bodied dances that breathe, beautifully phrased, and explore matters of the heart” (San Francisco Bay Guardian) with the premiere of its second Austin production where audiences are invited to let go and experience Freefall.

Freefall combines three new beautifully choreographed works and a special multi-media tribute to northern India culture as Cheryl Chaddick (pronounced "CHAIR-uhl"), the company's artistic director, vividly integrates strong messages of commitment, sacrifice and individuality with her dancers’ sheer talent that is sure to captivate audiences.

“This brand new set of dance works was inspired by the idea of freefalling and exploring the possibilities in modern dance,” said Chaddick. “This production uses the dancers’ extraordinary abilities to connect with the audience and tell stories of overcoming life’s challenges and accepting ourselves and each other for who we are and despite our differences.”

Freefall invites audiences to experience through the dancers a letting go: of one’s ego, of the familiar, of home, and of the expected. This production takes a deeper look into the thread that runs though the human condition from the epic story of Exodus to a very personal struggle of finding individuality despite social norms. Each performance also include with a multi-media tribute to Chaddick’s childhood spent partially in northern India.

The premiere of Freefall will mark Chaddick Dance Theater’s second production in Austin since returning to Texas after 20 years of choreographing, performing and teaching in San Francisco. Chaddick Dance Theater’s debut Austin production in 2008, Second Wind, won two of her dancers nominations in “best dancer award” category from the Austin Critics’ Table Awards.

THE PROGRAM

“Three for Violin” showcases the dancers’ sheer talent with luscious violin suites and serpentine movements. The multi-layered elements create a vibrant, uplifting piece and fully exhibit the dancers’ abilities. This piece will feature recordings by: The Lyric Quartet.

“The Watchful Sleeping Heart” symbolizes the story of the Book of Exodus, representing experiences of the unforgiving, unrelenting desert trek from the Torah and the Old Testament and—universally—the strength of the human will when seeking a better life. The dance is inspired by the exodus of the Israelites leaving Egypt and their wandering, confusion, death, challenges of faith, and relentless sacrifice for 40 years to seek freedom in the Promised Land. This piece is a reflection of fortitude and fight in seeking freedom as the sole reason for living and dying. This piece will feature recordings by: Maya Beiser, Alva Noto & Ryuichi Sakamoto, and Morgan Doctor.

“I’m Your Lullaby” takes an unconventional look into the idiosyncrasies of those we love and those merely tolerated in a humorous but loving depiction of mannerism, labels, worries and impulses that create the individual presence. Chaddick believes that our individuality is slowly melting together into a homogenized pot as differences are shunned and peer pressure often wins. This work attempts to turn the mirror around to get a glimpse of the human struggle to stay authentic by adopting self-commitment. This piece will feature recordings by: Thomas Newman.

“Faces and Images of India” will be included in each night’s performance as a multi-media piece that addresses Chaddick’s old fears and embraces the past 35 years through photos and music expressing the full body of the northern Indian culture. Having lived in Pakistan in her youth and her sister, Cynthia Chaddick, recently returning to the country with strong, scary, conflicting and loving memories, this moment is meant to express a sense of love and kindness towards the Indian people and their spirit during these confusing times and political climate.

Mold-making and Reproductions

Mold-making and Reproductions, Cost: $245
Have a favorite piece you wish to reproduce, as gifts to friends and family or to market and sell? During this course you will learn to take an alginate mold (a negative) from almost anything and then generate a positive. Or bring in an artwork you want to duplicate in ceramics. This is a learning seminar; the original pieces must not exceed 4in x 6in x 8in and will not be damaged in the process. This class is limited to 10 students. Cost includes most tools, materials, and one greenware firing. Thursday evenings, 6:30 pm – 9:30pm
May 7th thru June 11th

Denise Prince Martin : Things I Never Told You

Things I Never Told You
photographs by
Denise Prince Martin
On view at Women & Their Work
1710 Lavaca, Austin, TX. 78701
May 17 – June 23, 2007
Opening Reception: Thursday, May 17, 6 – 8 pm
The artist will talk about her work at 6:30pm

Women & Their Work proudly presents Things I Never Told You, a solo photography exhibition by Austin based artist, Denise Prince Martin. If a picture is worth a thousand words, Prince Martin’s series of women is a veritable library. Each image has the same structure, a woman in an environment holding an object. Within this framework, Prince Martin orchestrates lush narratives that hinge on the playful and absurd. These women represent more than themselves; they each tell a tale that explores the complexity of women’s lives and their portrayal in popular culture.

Named one of the Top Seven Individual Artists of 2004 by the Austin Chronicle, Prince Martin is a multi-disciplinary artist with notable accomplishments in painting, filmmaking and photography. Recently awarded a residency at the prestigious Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture, Prince Martin spent fourteen years living and working in Los Angeles and New York, where she studied fine art, critical theory and film at Cal Arts and New York’s School of Visual Arts. During this time she exhibited paintings and installations, shot editorial assignments and completed a feature film that was produced by Cary Woods.

For more information about Denise Prince Martin go to http://www.prunephotography.com/

I take simple shapes, cut them up and reassemble them as a means of replicating millions of years of natural eroding forces. Through this artificial compression of time, I have attempted to create works with a false sense of stasis; what seems to be stable and immutable could tumble at any moment. Permanence is an illusion, but regeneration is inevitable."

Ryah Christensen
"I am angry at cultural / intellectual norms that divide man and animal... Broken down, their logic seems arbitrary and hypocritical, only serving to confuse and obstruct, to blind man to himself. Recent works have started with stories, told me by various creatures I have met, that reveal that we are not LIKE animals, we ARE animals, and, so, the world makes perfect, irrational sense."
