Some critics have compared the band &mdash; which hails from Oakland, CA &mdash; to one of the quirkiest bands of all time, Mr. Bungle, and they may have a point (after all, like Bungle, SGM are not opposed to any musical style, and one of their albums was originally released by a label run by an ex-Bungle member, Trey Spruance). Strange costumes, makeup, and instruments that are both traditional and homemade turn out to be some of the key ingredients to Sleepytime Gorilla Museum, who have built a sizable cult following along the way. Comprised of members &mdash; deep breath now &mdash; Matthias Bossi (drums, glockenspiel, xylophone, vocals), Nils Frykdahl (guitar, flute, vocals), Carla Kihlstedt (violin, percussion guitar, autoharp, organ, vocals), Michael Mellender (percussion, assorted melodic instruments, vocals), and Dan Rathbun (bass, piano log, trombone, lute, vocals), SGM originally formed in 1999. Along the way, the group has released several long-players, including 2001&rsquo;s Grand Opening and Closing, 2003&rsquo;s Live, and 2004&rsquo;s Of Natural History. In 2006, the group signed with the End label, which promptly reissued Grand Opening and Closing with additional bonus tracks, and a year later, the group&rsquo;s fourth studio effort overall, 2007&rsquo;s In Glorious Times. "What if," we thought, "we put together a Sing-Along show from a previous decade and then just mixed all of the music together, instead of focusing on Ladies from the 1980s, or Power Ballads, or Pop Rap? What if we made a mix tape of one particular year and just jammed it full of every big hit from that year? What would that be like?" With the 1987 Sing-Along, we found out that it would be AWESOME. This November, we're revisiting that idea and jumping forward a full decade as we celebrate our 1997 Sing-Along. This is the year of Puff Daddy, who had hits with "<em>I'll Be Missing You,</em>" "<em>Can't Nobody Hold Me Down</em>," and a bunch of other songs that were really just songs from previous decades that we would rap over. But it's also the year that the Backstreet Boys first asked us to quit playing games with their hearts, when Hanson told us that in an MMmbop they'd be gone (and then stuck around forEVER), the Spice Girls told us what we'd need to do if we wanted to be their lovers (essentially just hook up with their friends, I think), and Donna Lewis promised that she'd love us, always, forever. The project is the introduction to Hudgins&rsquo; impressive songwritting as well as his vocal talents and quality. Hudgins has a versatile and distinctive voice sliding from a smoky croon to a shrieking holler, often, and without apology exposing his wide scope of vocal influences new and old. The musicianship and truly remarkable classic sound [of H.T.I] can be easily credited to Players/Producers Ethan Shaw (Bass) and Doug Strahan (guitar and back-up vocals) of local Austin Label Bloodchili Records (Chili cold blood), who offered their services both behind the scene as well as recording on Honky Tonk Illusion.
