There’s nothing subtle or complicated about The Last Vegas, and they don’t pretend there is. The Chicago band plays swaggering, stomping, balls-out guitar rock that’s clearly inspired by titans of the genre like AC/DC and Motorhead. Last year’s Seal the Deal is full of the usual ferocious guitars, big riffs and solos, propulsive rhythms, and sung/wailed vocals about kicking/getting some ass. Song titles include “Goddamn Fantastic” and “We’ll Drink Three”—yup, nothing subtle here. The band is touring now behind a new EP, the five-song High Class Thrash. Opening: Blackholicus.

Frequently regarded as one of the funniest movies of all time, 1975’s Monty Python And The Holy Grail uses a send-up of the King Arthur legend to lampoon government, aristocracy, religion, and much more. The manic troupe created a coherent (and highly quotable) comedy out of sketches that turned dismemberment (“It’s just a flesh wound”) and the bubonic plague (“I’m not dead yet”) into fertile material. And it’s relevant to the times—just take in a prayer levied for a Holy Hand Grenade: “Oh Lord, bless this hand grenade, that with it thou mayest blow thine enemies to tiny bits, in thy mercy.” It also spawned legions of dorks who can—and will—recite the film from memory at the slightest provocation, most of whom will be on hand here at the Alamo’s Quote-Along, loudly reveling in shrubberies and elderberries without fear of being repressed. www.theonion.com
The Hipshakes, CoCoComas, Hex Dispensers

Sheffield’s The Hipshakes may be the least polished British band to hit these shores in decades (or at least since the Real Losers broke up), but their shambolic garage-punk sound is tuned just right for American ears weaned on Memphis’ Goner records, who put out the band’s early 7-inch. Here, the band wrings spastic chaos alongside similarly wicked labelmate CoCoComa, led by married couple Bill and Lisa Roe; the Chicago group makes sinister Farfisa-driven stomp with an early ‘60s drive. Austin’s The Hex Dispensers opens with its deliriously catchy horror-punk.

O’Death is a New York troupe worth keeping an ear on, thanks to a ghostly banjo-punk sound that stands as unique and, paradoxically, timely in its timelessness. A good sense of the band comes through the sensations evoked by song titles such as “Busted Old Church,” “Ground Stump,” “Rickety Fence Teeth,” and “Gas Can Row.” Take a guess as to the sound of O’Death’s album Head Home and you won’t likely be far from the heart of it. Opening: Rock Plaza Central.
