DAWN OF THE DEAD showed us how awesome gore effects could be, and we were no longer satisfied with the standard Hollywood fare. But for a growing number of us, ARMY OF DARKNESS is where geekiness turned into full blown fan boy obsession. The world at large might think of Sam Raimi as the director of SPIDERMAN, but the world at large is obiously full of idiots, because it’s ridiculous that Tom Cruise is a big movie star and Bruce Campbell still has to fight for roles on syndicated cable shows. Bruce Campbell is the greatest talent to ever grace the silver screen, Sam Raimi is EVIL DEAD, and EVIL DEAD is ARMY OF DARKNESS. <br /><br /> Remember how fun it was when you first tried to explain the concept of the EVIL DEAD trilogy to your unsuspecting “friends”? “Well, see, there’s this guy who goes to a cabin a couple of times, and then his friends or girlfriend gets possessed by demons and he has to fight them, so he chops off his hand (oh, it had gone bad, so it’s okay), and then he puts a chainsaw on the stump and he holds a shotgun in the other hand and then he goes back in time to the Middle Ages where he has to fight an entire army of the undead. And the whole time he says all the coolest one-liners ever.” Well, your so-called friends may have looked at you with blank stares, but these Quote-Along screenings will be your mecca. So it's got that going for it, which is nice. And we'll make it even nicer by subtitling all of our favorite lines, bringing in special props, and starting the whole shebang with a bit of a putting competition. Sure, we can try to hate it for inspiring MEET THE SPARTANS, DISASTER MOVIE, SUPERHERO MOVIE, MOVIE PARODY MOVIE: THE MOVIE (man, I’d still pay money to see that last one) and every other box office comedy turd that they keep flushing down the throats of the mall theater going public. But god damn it, even though half of the movie is nothing but what should have been bad puns, each and every one just works so perfectly. Maybe it’s the brilliant send up of the overly dramatic disaster movies of the time. Maybe it’s Leslie Nielsen’s superb deadpanning. But my money is on the fact that it’s just plain hysterical to watch shit hit a fan.<br /><br /> As always with a Quote-Along, we’ll have all of our favorite lines subtitled on the screen so everyone can yell them out together, and we’ll have a bunch of special props to make the whole experience jump off the screen even more. "Where's your urge to purge?"</em> This is the movie that established the teen black comedy as the ultimate way of viewing high school, and way before Lindsay Lohan learned about a new way to play through the social politics of the clique system in MEAN GIRLS, Christian Slater taught Winona Ryder that there are much more...physical ways of handling queen bees. This movie may not be as chock full of one-liners as some of the Mel Brooks types of comedies we've done as Quote-Alongs in the past, but the magic of hearing everyone say, <em>"Lick it up, baby. Lick. It. Up,"</em> all in unison should be magical enough. But we’ve added to the show this time, too, with 6 new videos that weren’t in the original cut of Volume 2. After all, we started with THE PRINCESS BRIDE, then did HOLY GRAIL, and I knew that we’d be doing ARMY OF DARKNESS soon. But when we were looking at which Mel Brooks movie we wanted to Quote-Along to first, we stayed away from the castle of YOUNG FRANKENSTEIN (for now), and decided to focus on the film that put him on the Hollywood map for the first time, BLAZING SADDLES. Now, I’m not saying that we don’t love YOUNG FRANKENSTEIN (and there's no way we won't be singing "Puttin' on the Ritz" at the Ritz), but when we looked at BLAZING SADDLES, we realized that there was lots of room for other types of fun once we got outside of the castle.<br /><br />For one thing, we’re going to have beans. Lots and lots of beans. And not just a baked bean special on the menu so you can eat beans along with the characters onscreen. No. That would not be bean serious enough for BLAZING SADDLES. Instead, we’re going to set up a huge pot of simmering beans at the front of the theater. Need more beans? Just walk up and slop ‘em in your bowl, Old West style. And while we’ll still have our Blazing Saddles barbecue chicken pizza on the menu during the show, the die-hard fans won’t be hungry by the time the movie starts, because we’ll have gorged ourselves on all of the BBQ in central Texas. That’s right, on Saturday, November 10, we’re going to get a bus, a keg of beer, and take a tour of some of the best BBQ in the Central Texas area (which makes it the best BBQ in the world), then head back to the theater for one hell of a politically incorrect Quote-Along with our bellies full and our brain in a near coma of meat-injected ecstasy. What about the ladies? Sure, we've done the Ladies of the 80s show, but how do you fit the Spice Girls into that? You can't. And so this January we're putting together our very first POP PRINCESS SING-ALONG, focusing heavily on the princesses of the 90s, including the aforementioned Spice Girls, Britney, Christina, and more. But then we're going to broaden our range and include some of the princesses from the 80s as well And the princesses of today, too.
