Armed with ripe comparisons to Marc Bolan, Syd Barrett, and—oddly but aptly—Billie Holiday, Devendra Banhart became the de facto leader of an underground folk movement currently finding roots in cities and towns across the country. Banhart made a name for himself while living in New York, but his reputation truly sprouted on tour, where his freewheeling, often shirtless shows have fanned the fancy of indie-rock fans in thrall to his weird-beard folk persona. On his new Smokey Rolls Down Thunder Canyon, Banhart maintains his status as a subtle songsmith whose delicate voice sounds wavering and strange as it wanders through sadness, echoes, and the occasional Spanish lyric. Equally eerie opener Jana Hunter plays airy, haunted folk that sounds both timely and aged. Part of that timeliness owes to its actually sounding old; Hunter’s evident love of ‘60s folkie Karen Dalton couldn’t have been a turn-off to Banhart, whose Gnomonsong label released Hunter’s Blank Unstaring Heirs Of Doom.
