A godlike savior to his fans and a baffling B-lister to his detractors, Dashboard Confessional frontman Chris Carrabba landed certifiable star status when last year’s Dusk and Summer debuted near the top of the Billboard chart. True, it was a slow week, but charting at all is impressive for a guy with such limited range. Carraba’s heart-on-sleeve punk sensitivity helped to define emo-rock, but his songs are too indistinct to inspire much of a reaction from anyone other than his cultish followers, who will certainly turn out here to hear songs from the just-released The Shade of Poison Trees. Middle-slot time-killer Augustana is one of many wimpy acts currently tailoring songs for the “powerful” scenes on Grey’s Anatomy, but opener John Ralston might actually deserve your attention. His debut Needle Bed falls somewhere between Elvis Costello and The Beatles and his new Sorry Vampire-partially written with Jay Bennett and John’s former bandmate David Vandervelde-adds layers of (what Ralston terms) a “hybrid 21st-century junk-shop orchestra.”

Slaraffenland is based in Denmark, though its sound should settle familiarly on American ears. Rooted in post-rock and the more avant-garde end of the ambient spectrum, the group’s latest album Private Cinema is a sculpted, fragile length of sinuous songcraft that winds around vast, empty space and muted melody. Slaraffenland also contributed a gorgeous cover of “paranoid android” to Sereogum’s recent tribute to Radiohead’s OK Computer, appearing alongside Cold War Kids, David Bazan, The Twilight Sad, John Vanderslice, and Chris Walla.

Celebrating 20 years of bong-rattling space rock with this year’s And Then What, Austin’s ST 37 are crawling ever closer to “legendary” status, having earned their stripes alongside the city’s third-eye-gazing pioneers Butthole Surfers, Roky Erickson, and Ed Wall while continuing to pump out some of the most head-tripping, drone=tastic music ever to waft out of the scene. The band has flirted with Hawkwind and Can covers, Chrom-like noise collages, and Eno soundscapes in the past, but has never lost its homegrown, psychedelic cowboy sensibility. If Guitar Center amde a “Keep Austin Weird” pedal, all bands would sound like ST 37.
